
Re: “The Olympics are about winning, not just showing up and participating,” Feb. 25 letter to the editor.
I disagree with the letter-writer who thinks Olympic participants are wanting rewards for merely showing up. He is missing the point and overstating his argument. I work in an elementary school. We teach students that they don’t always get ribbons and certificates for their efforts and achievements. It is impressed upon them that they should give every undertaking their best effort and take reward in a job well done. Sometimes there is a gold medal or a round of applause. But not always. It’s a lesson that serves them well in life.
