Mullen announced Vincent White, a 1979 graduate of the school who went on to play at Stanford and in the USFL, as its new head football coach on Wednesday.

White takes over for Tom Thenell, who resigned in January after going 34-31 in six seasons, and was that saw almost 70 applicants.

The 56-year-old was most recently the offensive coordinator at Delaware State, and last coached preps at Rangeview in the mid 1980s.

As a 5-foot-8 running back, White starred on Mullen’s 1978 Class 3A state championship team and was also a standout in basketball and track. He takes over a Mustangs program that has produced numerous Division I talents over the last few years, but finished 5-6 last fall.

White is the latest notable hire in Class 5A football, as Ed McCaffrey recently took over the helm at Valor Christian, Todd Casebier landed at Castle View and Dustin Delaney was picked up by Eaglecrest.
