Mullen football coach Tom Thenell resigned from his position on Tuesday,

Thenell was 34-31 in six seasons with the Mustangs after taking over for Dave Logan. The best Mullen did in that time frame was go 9-3 while reaching the Class 5A quarterfinals in 2016.

This past fall, the Mustangs finished with a losing mark (5-6) for the first time in three seasons and lost in the first round of the playoffs to rival Regis Jesuit.

Before arriving at Mullen, Thenell coached at Bear Creek from 1992-2011, building the Bears into a perennial Jeffco League contender.

He will remain on staff at Mullen, where he was a 1980 graduate and the quarterback of two state title teams, as a physical education teacher.

The Mullen gig is the sixth 5A head coaching job to open this season, and the fourth at a school that made the playoffs in 2017.
