Fire danger is elevated in northeastern Colorado again Friday as warm temperatures, dry conditions and wind gusts create the perfect environment for sparks to fly.

The National Weather Service in Boulder issued a red flag warning stretching from Fort Collins to Sterling, alerting firefighting authorities that conditions are ripe for a wildfire. Afternoon wind gusts in that area could pick up to 40 miles per hour with temperatures in the upper 60s.

In Denver, a mostly sunny day is forecast to be paired with a high near 66 degrees.

Mountain snow is expected to start falling Friday night into Saturday, with up to 5 inches of accumulation predicted. Temperatures should drop and the winds should pick up, particularly along the Eastern Plains, the weather service said.

Saturday along the Front Range is going to be a windy one, with gusts nearing 30 miles per hour. Forecasters said the day should be partly sunny with a high near 55 degrees.

Sunday should bring the sun with a high near 52 degrees and light winds.
