Re: “Colorado’s Raise the Bar amendment meets reality,” March 6 editorial.
The right way to give rural voters a chance to sign ballot initiatives is not by Amendment 71’s unconstitutional and obstructive requirements, but by allowing petition signing online, preferably on the secretary of state’s website. Colorado voters, after identifying themselves by driver’s license or Social Security number, are currently able to change their party with a simple click. Any of us, rural or urban, should be able to read a petition and sign it just as easily. This would enable groups without huge funds to qualify for the ballot, save the secretary of state the cost of comparing physical signatures, reduce harassment and misrepresentation to obtain signatures, get people to read more of the petition text before signing, allow people to “unsign” petitions if they change their minds, and save time, gas, paper and money. And it would be more secure than the current system.
