A main break 9-feet under ground has left more than 100 homes in Nederland without water since Friday and it could be a few more days before service is restored.

A Nederland public works crew began digging Monday morning but hadn’t identified the source of the main line break by Monday afternoon. The crews will work through the evening and until the source is found, according to a Facebook post.

Town Administrator Karen Gerrity said that they wouldn’t know how long repairs would take until they reached the pipes.

“Once they have an idea of where the break is and how it happened and what parts they will need to replace, we will have a better idea of how long it will take,” Gerrity said.

Mayor Kristopher Larsen on Sunday said crews believe the leak is under the eastern part of the roundabout in the center of town.

While working on the problem, the Nederland Community Center is passing out cases of bottled water and allowing anyone to fill up containers.

Laura King, one of the residents without water, hauled several empty jugs to the community center to fill up on Monday morning. King said she’s been able to make do with the problem, but mundane tasks such as washing dishes and even going to the bathroom have become more difficult without running water.

“We’re filling the toilets (with water). It takes a lot to deal with that,” King said. “It’s illuminating.”
