Joseph Yun recently retired as the U.S. special representative for North Korea policy.

Recent news of South Korea’s diplomatic breakthrough with North Korea is a historic opportunity for the United States to pursue diplomacy. However, I have no faith in President Donald Trump to take historic action. I am deeply concerned, putting it politely, that Trump has not yet appointed an ambassador to South Korea, and the resignation of Joseph Yun — the State Department’s top diplomat in charge of North Korea policy — leaves a crucial position vacant.

I urge Congressman Ed Perlmutter and Sens. Cory Gardner and Michael Bennet to speak out and demand an expedited nomination of qualified candidates to the key diplomatic positions with North and South Korea. We should be pursuing peace on the peninsula after three generations of war, both hot and cold.

Peter Linton, Arvada
