Dead freakin’ last. That’s where the Colorado this week in at least national Ի.
The optimist in me says, there’s only one way to go and that’s up! But, sadly for local footy fans, don’t be surprised if it takes some time for this squad to round into shape. Colorado’s attack was woeful during former coach Pablo Mastroeni’s tenure. It’s part of the reason why Padraig Smith last year showed the club legend the door and hired MLS’ youngest coach, Anthony Hudson (now 37), this offseason.
As the Rapids get set to open their home schedule Saturday against Sporting Kansas City in front of what they predict will be a sell-out crowd at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, Hudson is a man without his cavalry. High-priced attacker Shkëlzen Gashi is injured and striker Yannick Boli is still sorting out his paperwork. Forward Joe Mason and playmaker Stefan Aigner are still rounding into form and aren’t expected to start.
Sure, it’s the home opener and fans will be excited, but it may be a while still before they get to see how dangerous this team can be. So don’t be surprised if the Rapids sit in the MLS power rankings dungeon for the first part of the year.
Be patient. Give Hudson a chance to assemble his weaponry. If the Rapids can scratch out some points early this season, they could surprise some people this year.
