Diamondbacks 8, Rockies 3
At Salt River Fields
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Like unwanted bedfellows, the Rockies and Diamondbacks faced each other for the sixth time in a month Sunday. They familiarity bred apathy. Neither team was interested in giving the other one more chance to scout their complete staffs.
So the Rockies started right-handed prospect Yency Almonte and he was blasted for four runs on four hits, including a home run, and two walks in just one inning of Arizona’s runaway victory. After Jake Lamb lined an RBI double, Arizona shortstop Nick Ahmed brought him in with a two-run homer.
Arizona starter Taylor Clarke fared better, shutting down a Rockies lineup that included , and to just two hits in five innings.
On the mound: Arizona totaled 17 hits against seven Rockies pitchers, a rotation that included prospects Shane Broyles and James Farris, and bullpen candidate Jerry Vasto.
At the plate: Among Rockies regulars, only managed multiple hits, including a two-run homer in the ninth. He also got a workout in the field, playing first base, third base and left field.
Worth noting: Valaika’s homer snapped a gnarly streak. The Rockies went 17 innings without a run, dating back to the eighth inning Friday vs. the Reds.
Up next: The Rockies are off Monday before playing their final Cactus League game Tuesday against Seattle at Salt River Fields at 1:10 p.m. MT.
