The Western Slope has staked its claim to the best Division II softball team in the country.
Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction is a perfect 30-0 this season and the Mavericks are ranked No. 1 by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. The 30-game win streak is a program record and half of those victories ended by mercy rule. CMU has scored double-digit runs 16 different times while junior right-hander McKenzie Surface, of Discovery Canyon High School in Colorado Springs, has tallied 101 strikeouts with a 2.66 ERA.

Fourth-year head coach Ben Garcia has assembled a roster with nine Colorado natives that appears well suited for a deep NCAA Tournament run in May.
“(We’re) trying to keep them grounded, first of all, and they’re doing a good job of that on their own. We talk about that all the time,” “One game at a time, one series at a time, and they’ve responded fairly well.”
CMU aims to keep its perfect streak alive at 2 p.m. Friday for the first of a two-game series against Fort Lewis.
