Eddie Moreno shows off his Marine ...
Helen H. Richardson, The Denver Post
Eddie Moreno shows off his Marine Corps ring he lost more than 17 years ago on March 25, 2018 in Brighton. Eddie Moreno lost his treasured U.S. Marine Corps ring about 17 years ago. A man with a metal detector found it five years ago under four inches of dirt in Denver’s City Park. That started his quest to find the owner. Just a couple weeks ago, Moreno got his ring back. The ring, which has a garnet in it, was given to Moreno by his ex-wife Trebis who had inscribed the inside of the ring with her and Moreno’s names. Her unusual name helped the man who found it eventually track down Trebis to get the ring back to Moreno. Moreno was part of the Marine Corps 1st FSSG Combat Supply 7th Engineers Unit.

Re: “A Golden Retrieval,” March 28 print story (online version titled “When a Marine’s precious ring went missing in Denver, it took 17 years and a lucky break to unearth the mystery“)

Nice story about finding and returning the marine’s long lost gold ring. But come on: “Golden Retrieval: Dogged Effort…”?

Why does The Denver Post constantly throw up cutesy headlines like this? Do you think it is good writing, good newspapering, good eye catching stuff? Itap not. It is sophomoric reaching at best, actually more like tripe, and a practice not followed by good, real newspapers.

I understand that reporters don’t always, or even often,  write their own headlines, but surely somebody there ought to have some taste, enough sense, and the skills to avoid such garbage. Try. You and the paper will be better for it.
