The Avalanche is on the brink of playoff elimination and its hope of extending the series against Nashville hinge on third-string goalie Andrew Hammond, who will start in lieu of the injured Semyon Varlamov and Jonathan Bernier on Friday. Here’s what you should know about Hammond.

  • The 30-year-old British Columbia native joined the Avs as part of the three-way trade that sent Matt Duchene to Ottawa and brought 19-year-old defenseman Sam Girard to Colorado from Nashville. After going 20-1-2 with the Senators as a rookie in 2014-15, Hammond continually fell down Ottawa’s depth chart and was spending most of his time in the AHL before the Avs acquired him.
  • He started two playoff games for the Senators in 2014-15, posting a 3.44 goals against average and a .914 save percentage in a pair of losses.
  • He’s played in two games for the Avs, both when Varlamov and Bernier have been injured. The first was a 2-0 loss to the Flyers on March 28, his only start. The other was his third-period appearance during Wednesday’s 3-2 playoff loss to the Predators. He didn’t allow a goal and made eight saves.
  • He weighs in at 6-foot-2, 215 pounds.
  • He has a guaranteed salary of $1.35 million and will be an unrestricted free agent with the season ends.
  • His nickname is the “Hamburglar.”
  • Played college hockey at Bowling Green.
