Elbert County deputies took a 23-year-old man into custody Thursday after he allegedly broke into his mother’s home and assaulted her, prompting the woman to shoot her son.

James Mamich was arrested Thursday night after an investigation into Monday’s shooting at a home north of Elizabeth, according to an Elbert County Sheriff’s Office news release.

Investigators determined that Mamich, who doesn’t live with his mother, broke into her house and assaulted her, police said.

The mother, who has not been named, then called the police to report that she had just shot her son. Police said the woman feared for her life.

Manich was taken to a hospital for his injuries and released Thursday evening. He is being held on charges including first-degree burglary, criminal mischief and assault.

The case is being reviewed by the district attorney, the news release said. No charges have been filed against Mamich’s mother.
