Baltimore Orioles starter Kevin Gausman on Monday recorded an immaculate inning.
An immaculate inning occurs when a pitcher strikes out three batters on nine pitches. Gausman, who starred at Grandview High School, accomplished the feat in the seventh inning against the Cleveland Indians.
“I didn’t realize it until I got in the dugout,” . “(My teammates) were a little more pumped up than they’d normally be. Told me I tied Major League history or something. I did it in college once before. But to do it in the big leagues is obviously a little different.”
Despite striking out seven and allowing just two runs over eight innings, Gausman and the Orioles lost the game, 2-1.
Gausman isn’t the first player from Colorado to pitch an immaculate inning. Former Aurora Central star Danny Jackson threw one for the Kansas City Royals on Oct. 24, 1985 in a World Series game against the St. Louis Cardinals.
