Throughout their history, the Colorado Rockies have always been known for their hitting. So far in 2018, they’re bucking the trend.

After Monday’s loss to the Cubs, Colorado is batting .224 on the season, ranking near the bottom of the majors. “Colorado’s offense has never opened a season hitting so poorly,” Patrick Saunders writes.

When it rains, it pours — the lineup took a hit as second baseman DJ LeMahieu, the 2016 NL batting champion, was placed on the DL on Monday. The team experimented with Ian Desmond — who’s batting a paltry .178 with a .229 on-base percentage — in the leadoff spot on Monday. He went 0-for-5.

So what can be done? In Patrick’s column on Sunday, he predicted that 24-year-old David Dahl “will be Colorado’s starting left fielder by mid-May, at the very latest.” Back in 2016, Dahl hit .315 with seven homers and 24 RBIs in 63 games. If he can rediscover that bat, maybe it’ll provide the spark the Rox need.
