Pedestrian struck, killed in middle of U.S. 85 by semi carrying beef from Greeley plant

Man is 22nd person to die in a Weld County crash this year

A man died early Wednesday morning after he was struck by a semi-truck in the middle of U.S. 85 in north Greeley.

Around 3:13 a.m. Wednesday, Greeley police responded to the crash in the 400 block of U.S. 85. According to a release from Greeley police, a JBS semi-truck driver was leaving the beef plant with a load of beef, going south on U.S. 85. He told police he was traveling about 40 miles per hour when the man appeared in the middle of the highway.

The driver said he braked heavily in an attempt to avoid striking the pedestrian, but was unable to avoid him.

The driver stopped immediately and called 911, according to the release.

The pedestrian is the 22nd person to die so far this year in traffic incidents on Weld County roads. Through this date last year, 23 people had died in traffic crashes.
