Slather on suntan lotion before going out in the sunshine Thursday because a heat record in the Mile High City is about to fall, forecasters say.

The high is expected to top out at around 89 degrees, which would be 3 degrees hotter than the record of 86 degrees set at Denver International Airport on May 10, 1991, according to the National Weather Service.

Denverites will be basking under sunny skies Thursday afternoon. Southwesterly breezes gusting up to 20 mph are possible.

The hot temperatures pose a fire danger on the Eastern Plains.

Friday and the weekend is a different story.

Thunderstorms and showers are forecast beginning Friday when the high temperature will drop by 10 degrees to about 79 degrees.

There’s a 30 percent chance of rain, both on Friday night and Saturday, according to the NWS. The high temperature Saturday will be around 65 degrees.

Afternoon thunderstorms and rain are expected Sunday as well. The high temperature will be around 70.
