The Weld County Coroner on Wednesday identified him as Thomas Junior Garcia, 45, of Greeley.
Greeley Police responded Tuesday morning to a report of a suspicious vehicle in the 600 block of 48th Avenue, near Shawsheen Elementary School.
Officers tried talking to Garcia, but he fled east on foot, according to a news release. Police say Garcia displayed a knife to officers in the 4000 block of Seventh Street. After an unsuccessful attempt to subdue him with a Taser, an officer fired his weapon at Garcia, according to the release.
The Critical Incident Response Team is continuing its investigation of the incident.
