Two people died Tuesday afternoon in a crash between a train and a minivan at an intersection along U.S. 85 in Douglas County where there were no train-crossing arms.
The engineer blew the horn as the BNSF train passed through the intersection south of Ron King Trail, but was unable to stop before hitting the vehicle that was carrying two people, Douglas County Deputy Jason Blanchard said.
“We don’t know what might have happened,” Blanchard said.
Multiple agencies responded to the crash in the 8500 block of U.S. 85, South Metro Fire Rescue said. The train tracks run parallel to the highway in that area, with intersections leading to businesses and neighborhoods. Some of them do have crossing arms installed.
Both people who were inside the minivan were pronounced dead at the scene. The identities of the victims will be released after the coroner’s investigation.
