Trailing by a goal with less than four minutes remaining, used goals from seniors Jack Egan and August Johnson to stun Alexander and walk out of Mile High Stadium with a 8-6 victory in Friday’s Class 4A boys’ lacrosse state championship game.
Top-ranked Dawson (17-2), which defeated Cheyenne Mountain 10-3 in the regular season, lost to in the 2016 and 2017 state-title games.
Indians junior Wiley Burkett accounted for their eighth goal, using a power move just outside the crease with 1:25 remaining. Egan scored 11 seconds after Dawson took a 6-5 lead on a goal by senior Jack Shams with 3:58 to go. Egan capped a terrific offensive rush by Deano Johnson.
After August Johnson’s goal with 3:06 to play, Cheyenne Mountain won the faceoff and burned the clock before Burkett scored the insurance goal.
It was the Mustangs’ second loss of the season. Their only other loss was to Class 5A .
