The Rockies were off Monday, but it didn’t mean that it was an off day for the entire team.
The front office was at work for the first and second rounds of the MLB amateur draft. GM Jeff Bridich and Co. picked up a couple of high-profile prospects who could make an impact for Colorado in a few years. Reporter Kyle Newman broke down the picks:
Ryan Rolison, Ole Miss pitcher: No. 22 overall pick
A product of Jackson, Tenn. (University School of Jackson), the lefty sits at 91-94 mph on the fastball, uses his curveball as his out pitch and has an effective, but still developing, changeup.
Grant Lavigne, Bedford (N.M.) High School first baseman: No. 42 overall
The 6-foot-4, 230-pound Lavigne is a left-handed hitter with raw power who is committed to Wake Forest University. He leads the state in average and home runs and was selected as the state’s Gatorade player of the year.
Mitchell Kilkenny, Texas A&M pitcher: No. 76 overall
“He’s got a tall, rangy body, the arm works good and he’s got solid stuff — he was at 94 to 95 (mph) earlier in the year,” said Rockies’ vice president of scouting Bill Schmidt, who added he believes Kilkenny has the potential to be a major league starter.
The there weren’t the only ones with Colorado ties. Former Silver Creek ace Cole Winn was selected with the 15th pick by the Texas Rangers. Rounds three to 10 take place Tuesday starting at 11 a.m. And rounds 11-40 begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday.
