Broncos inside linebacker Brandon Marshall enters his seventh NFL season with a new look.
Slimmer, it turns out, can be better.
“I weighed in this morning at 225,” Marshall told reporters during Denver’s mandatory minicamp. “So since I started at (organized team activities), I’ve lost 11 pounds.”
The NFL’s evolution from power and strength to speed and finesse has changed the job description at inside linebacker, because as Marshall explains, “Tight ends run 4.5 (second 40-yard dashes).” Marshall finished the 2017 season with a career-high three sacks in addition to 106 tackles, four pass deflections and one forced fumbles.
Marshall believes a lighter load will allow him to increase those totals.
“I want to be able to move more efficiently. I want to be able to feel better on the field. I want to have less body fat. I think thatap important,” Marshall said. “I could be 240, but if I’ve got a lot of body fat itap just going to slow me down. I want to get down. In these next five weeks while I’m off, I can focus on my strength training and build muscle. I want to just lose the fat and be stronger, leaner and more effective.”
