An unidentified man died in Colorado Springs Monday morning after he crashed while fleeing the scene of a different accident, according to Colorado Springs Police.

The first accident was a minor, non-injury traffic accident near South Circle Drive and Interstate 25. Police said the man drove away from the scene but failed to navigate a turn onto an exit ramp. The fatal crash happened around 8:40 a.m. at the intersection of South Circle Drive and Hancock Expressway.

“The vehicle left the roadway, went across the grass median… and struck a light pole,” according to police. “The vehicle then continued east over the entrance ramp and into a drainage ditch where it finally came to a stop.”

Police said speed appeared to be a factor in the crash, but they don’t know whether drugs or alcohol were involved.

The man had a dog with him in the car at the time of the accident. The dog survived and was taken to by the Humane Society for treatment.
