The Broncos have lost reserve safety Jamal Carter for the season as a result of a torn hamstring he suffered during Saturday’s preseason game against Minnesota, a source confirmed to The Denver Post.

Carter was injured while making a tackle along the sideline. He was able to hobble off the field but needed assistance to get to the locker room.

His injury was first reported by 9News.

Carter, a second-year player who made the Broncos’ roster last season as an undrafted free agent out of Miami, appeared in 16 games as a rookie and made eight tackles. Carter was listed third on Denver’s initial preseason depth chart at strong safety behind Su’a Cravens and .

Carter is headed to injured reserve and the Broncos will fill his spot by signing safety Shamarko Thomas, a veteran of 60 regular season games (two starts) for Pittsburgh and Buffalo, according to a league source. ESPN first reported the move.

Thomas was released by Indianapolis on Saturday, two days after he was ejected from the Colts’ game at Seattle for a helmet to helmet hit on receiver David Moore. Thomas practiced with the Broncos on Monday and wore No. 47, formally worn by rookie linebacker Josey Jewell, who will now wear No. 59.

“It’s all in God’s plan,” Thomas said. “The ejection, I led with my helmet, that’s what they say. I’m just happy to be here and to be a Bronco. … I definitely don’t mind playing special teams. Like you said, I made a living off of it.”
