A fire that started at an old storage building in Longmont last night was most likely caused by the spread of a campfire.

The building at First Avenue and Terry Street sustained extensive damage, but nobody was hurt, according to Longmont Fire spokeswoman Molly Cropp.

Officials first reported that the building was abandoned, but are now saying that it was being used for storage and to grow hemp. According to Cropp, the building’s owners had hired a few homeless people to stay near the property to keep children and other homeless people from entering it.

The fire started outside the building, which was a former flour mill, and worked its way into the large metal structure attached to the concrete structure used for flour processing years ago. It mostly likely originated with a campfire, Cropp said.

Cropp said 25 firefighters from Longmont Fire and Mountain View Fire as well as units from Longmont police and American Medical Response were all called to the scene. Crews fought the fire from around 11:30 p.m. until 4 a.m.
