A storm headed to Denver on Wednesday will build first over the Colorado Rockies, move over Denver late in the afternoon and then blossom into a full-fledged natural thunder, wind and lightning show, according to forecasters.

Early Wednesday it will be mostly sunny, with a high temperature near 81 degrees. Winds could gust up to 20 mph, according to the National Weather Service in Boulder.

Rain showers and thunderstorms are likely before 3 a.m. There’s a 70 percent chance of precipitation and thunderstorms Wednesday night, with wind gusting up to 20 mph.

Snow above 8,000 feet is also possible, the weather forecast says.

It will continue to rain through Thursday morning before noon. Cooler temperatures are expected Thursday, when the high will reach around 66 degrees.

Rain is in the forecast on Friday, through the weekend and on Columbus Day on Monday.

On Sunday, when the Colorado Rockies baseball team faces off with the Milwaukee Brewers in the third game of the National League Division Series, Rockies players will rain homers down on Coors Field, according to the forecast by Colorado Climate Control.

Along the way, temperatures will plummet, from the upper 60s on Friday to the upper 40s on Monday, the NWS says.

The low temperature on Sunday will hover just above freezing at around 33 degrees. On Monday night, the low will sink below freezing to 29 degrees, forecasters say.
