OFFENSE
Play caller: Coordinator Jeremy Bates.
Analysis: Bates, 42, is in his first year as the Jets’ offensive coordinator, promoted from quarterbacks coach during the offseason. He was on the Broncos’ staff from 2006-08, including the final year of the Mike Shanahan Era as coordinator. He was out of coaching from 2012-17. … The Jets have lost three consecutive games after opening with a 48-17 win at Detroit. … The Jets are 21st in scoring (22.3), 29th in yards (298.3), tied for 25th in rushing (88.0), 27th in passing (201.3), 24th on third down (34.6) and 31st in the red zone (36.4 TD rate). … The organization is all-in on QB Sam Darnold, drafted third overall in April. He won a camp competition over (current backup) and (traded to New Orleans). … Darnold, 21, has a 72.6 rating (30th) and his five interceptions are tied for fourth-most in the NFL. … In their win last week, the Jaguars rushed five or more players on 11 of Darnold’s 41 drop-backs. … The Jets’ most common personnel group is 3WR-1RB-1TE. … and form a RB combo, carrying 42 and 39 times, respectively. Crowell’s four TD rushes are tied for third in the league. Powell has 10 catches. … WR Quincy Enunwa is a great story. He missed all of 2017 with bulging discs in his neck, but leads the Jets with 21 catches for 278 yards. No other player has more than 10 catches. Enunwa turns into a running back after the catch because of his power to run through tackles. He broke three tackles during a 42-yard catch last week. … WR Terrell Pryor has eight catches but played only two snaps last week and has been battling groin injury. … After Enunwa, the WR group is Robbie Anderson and , who have combined for 14 catches. … Rookie TE Chris Herndon, a fourth-round pick, played 36 snaps in Week 4. … The starting OL is LT Kelvin Beachum (three penalties), LG James Carpenter, C Spencer Long, RG Brian Winters and RT Brandon Shell. The Jets have allowed 10 sacks.
DEFENSE
Play caller: Coordinator Kacy Rodgers.
Analysis: Rodgers, 49, followed Bowles from the Dolphins’ staff and this is his first coordinator post. … The Jets are middle of the road statistically but are coming off a loss at Jacksonville in which they allowed QB Blake Bortles to throw for a career-high 388 yards. … The Jets run a base 3-4 scheme. … They are 13th in scoring (22.3), 13th in yards (355.5), 16th against the run (108.3), 14th against the pass (247.3), 15th on third down (37.3 percent) and eighth in the red zone (opponents’ TD rate is 45.5 percent). … Against the Jaguars, the Jets rushed at least five players on 20 of Bortles’ 43 drop-backs (46.5 percent). … The Jets are plus-2 in turnover ratio (tied for seventh in the league) and their 10 takeaways are tied for third. … The defense is a mix of their first-round picks (DT Leonard Williams, LB Darron Lee and SS Jamal Adams) and free-agent additions (CB Trumaine Johnson, NT Steve McLendon, LB Avery Williamson and CB Morris Claiborne). … The early down DL is Williams, McLendon and rookie third-round DE Nathan Shepherd. Williams can be a disruptive run-stopper/pass-rusher, but has only 11 tackles and one sack. … DE Henry Anderson was acquired from Indianapolis for a seventh-round pick and has a team-high 2 1/2 sacks. … The every-down LBs are Lee and Williamson inside. Lee’s two INT are most in the league among linebackers and Williamson is second on the team in tackles (30). … OLB Jordan Jenkins and Jeremiah Attaochu play in base situations. … Johnson was given $34 million at signing to leave the Rams for the Jets. He has more penalties (three) than INTs (one) and allowed a 67-yard TD to the Jaguars’ . … CB Morris Claiborne and CB Buster Skrine are the Nos. 2-3 corners. … Adams is a fun player to watch. He will position himself all over the field and can defend the run and pass equally well. He has a team-high 31 tackles, including 12 last week. … FS Marcus Maye missed Weeks 1-3 with ankle/foot injury but played all 77 snaps in Week 4. … The Jets’ secondary struggled defending shallow crossing routes against the Jaguars. … There was also an effort issue — the pursuit wasn’t exactly high intensity on Jaguars RB ’s 31-yard TD catch.
SPECIAL TEAMS
Coordinator: Brant Boyer.
Analysis: Boyer, 47, played 10 years for Miami, Jacksonville and Cleveland and has been in the NFL as a coach since 2012. He is in his third year as the Jets’ coordinator. … The Jets’ special teams are off to a good start. K Jason Myers, signed after he lost a preseason competition in Seattle to Sebastian Janikowski, is 7 of 7 on field goals and has 18 touchbacks in 21 kickoff attempts. … P Lachlan Edwards is fourth in net average (43.9) and has only one touchback in 22 attempts. … The Jets rank second on punt returns and 29th on kick returns. PR Andre Roberts’ 26.7-yard average (including a 78-yard TD) is second in the league. … The Jets rank 13th covering punts and tied for ninth covering kicks. Roberts handles the kick returns (17.8-yard average).
