Driver dies in two-car crash in Lakewood; surviving teen driver suffers serious injuries

A driver died in a two-car crash Wednesday night in Lakewood, police said.

The collision happened about 8:40 p.m. at the intersection of West Jewell Avenue and West Iliff Drive, according to a news release.

A Mercedes sedan hit a black Mitsubishi Lancer driven by a 19-year-old, police said. Witnesses told police the driver of the Mercedes was traveling at a high speed at the time of the collision.

The Mercedes driver, a man, was pronounced dead at the scene. The teen driver was taken to a hospital with serious injuries.

Speed was a “major factor” in the crash, police said. Drugs or alcohol are not suspected. An investigation is ongoing.
