After a couple weeks of sunshine and warm temperatures, smatterings of snowfall and an autumn chill returned to Colorado on Tuesday.

While there wasn’t much in the way of accumulation in the Denver metro, mountain communities and portions of I-70 and I-25 both reported multiple inches of snow. That included a couple inches in Estes Park and four inches in Allenspark northwest of Boulder, according to the National Weather Service. Communities in and around Colorado Springs also had some accumulation.

Temperatures in Denver reached as high as 43 at 10:30 a.m. and dipped to 32 by 9 p.m., according to the National Weather Service, as a misty mixture of rain and light snow fell in the area of the mousetrap, where I-70 and I-25 intersect. The city of Aurora went on accident alert at 7:30 p.m.

Commercial vehicle chain laws and passenger vehicle traction laws were posted Tuesday night along the I-70 corridor in the mountains. Several mountain passes, including Loveland and Vail, also posted chain and traction laws.

Adverse road conditions Tuesday night in Teller County led to snow plow crash, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation. The crash, east of Divide, closed the eastbound lanes of U.S. 24 as emergency vehicles responded and secondary crashes occurred. There were no immediate reports of injuries.

Forecasters expect snow overnight in Denver city as the temperature drops to a low of about 30 degrees. Snow accumulation in the city should be between 1 to 3 inches by Wednesday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

Skies should be gradually clearing on Wednesday during the mid-morning hours and the high temperature should climb to about 47 degrees, the weather service said.

Halloween revelers, hitting the streets and clubs at dusk for candies and parties, should not fear Denver’s Wednesday evening weather. Denver’s temperature at 6 p.m., about sundown, Wednesday should be about 40 degrees, according to the weather service.

On Thursday, skies in Denver should be partly sunny with a high temperature of 55 degrees.
