Up to four inches of snow was predicted to fall Sunday in Denver, though the foothills and mountains are expected to receive much more.
Most of the snow in Denver was expected to fall between 6 a.m. and 2 p.m. though snowfall in the metro area is likely to continue into the night,
Between 4 and 10 inches of snow will fall in the mountains along the Front Range and the foothills, according to the weather service. More than 5 inches of snow had already fallen northeast of Boulder before 7 a.m. Sunday, according to a weather service report.
The snow and ice could make driving along the Front Range difficult through Monday morning, according to the weather service.
The snow and icy roads prompted the Colorado Department of Transportation to issue traction laws for multiple segments of Interstate 70. All vehicles traveling between Idaho Springs and U.S. Highway 6 in Denver must have snow tires, all-wheel drive capabilities or have traction devices.
Though Monday’s high temperature is never expected to rise above freezing, Tuesday and Wednesday will be warmer and sunny. The high temperature on Tuesday is expected to be 48 degrees and on Wednesday it will rise to 58 degrees.
Snow will increase in coverage across the NE plains, I-25 Urban Corridor, Mtns & FtHills thru the mid-morning. Snow will mainly be of light intensity, however a few bands of moderate to heavy snow likely. Snowfall rates will of 1"/hr under the heavier bands.
