The intersection of 47th Avenue and Washington Street in Denver is closed following a water main break on Monday morning, the Denver Police Department tweeted.

“Alternate routes advised,” Denver police said in a tweet.

Denver Water shut off service to an area south of East Elgin Place to 47th Avenue between and Pearl Place and Washington Avenue, said Todd Hartman, a spokesman for the agency.

The break occurred on an eight-inch cast iron mainline. Denver Water does not know what caused the break, but it usually sees more breaks as seasons change, Hartman said.

Crews are at the scene and are working to repair the break, Hartman said.
