
When the Larimer County Crash Reconstruction and Scene Handling Team pulls up to a site of mangled cars and backed up traffic, they come prepared.
In the few hours following a major crash within the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office jurisdiction, they scan roadways, measure trajectories, speak with witnesses and take photos — all while handling a steady stream of antsy drivers.
And that’s only the first few steps toward a comprehensive understanding of a roadway tragedy.
“We get called out if the situation is truly dire,” CRASH Team Supervisor Sgt. Mike Rairdon said as he sat down to explain exactly what deputies do at the scene of a crash.
Joined by other members of the CRASH Team, Rairdon told the Reporter-Herald that the team responds to accidents that will likely need attention in court. Using a multitude of techniques and gadgets, the team can prepare an understandable case for the Larimer County District Attorney’s Office.
