So long, Sky Sox: Brewers’ new rookie-level team in Colorado Springs dubbed “Rocky Mountain Vibes”

The inspiration for the nickname came from “the outdoors, the sunshine, that feeling you get when you live here in Colorado.”

At 6,531 feet above sea level, UCHealth Field is at a higher elevation than any other professional baseball park in North America, 1,000 feet higher than Coors Field. The Colorado Springs Sky Sox hosted the Sacramento River Cats Thursday night, June 7, 2012.

Colorado Springs baseball fans will now be cheering on the Rocky Mountain Vibes.

That’s the name of the Brewers’ new rookie-level team which replaced the Sky Sox, Milwaukee’s Triple-A affiliate that departed for San Antonio. The name was announced Monday at Security Service Field.

The inspiration for the nickname came from “the outdoors, the sunshine, that feeling you get when you live here in Colorado,” Vibes general manager Chris Phillips explained during Monday’s name unveiling.

The team, which features a flaming s’more with sunglasses as a mascot, will compete in the short-season Pioneer League.

“Vibes” wasn’t one of the monikers from the organization’s “Name The Team” contest in July, with the five finalists being Happy Campers, Lamb Chops, Punchy Pikas, Throttle Jockeys and the Rocky Mountain Oysters.
