Winter storm warning issued for weekend snowfall in Colorado mountains; up to a foot predicted

Bring tire chains and skis if you’re headed to the mountains this weekend.

While Denver and other cities along the Front Range will remain relatively dry, the mountains are expecting up to a foot of snow between Friday night and Sunday morning. Roads in the mountains could become slippery as early as Thursday night.

The National Weather Service in Boulder effective from 6 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Sunday in Colorado’s north and central mountains. The warning means that weather will make travel very hazardous or impossible and that drivers should expect snow-covered roads and limited visibility.

Up to a foot of snow could fall in Steamboat Springs and Vail and up to 8 inches in Aspen. Denver, Boulder and Fort Collins aren’t expected to have any snowfall.

What’s worse than driving in snow? Driving in blowing snow. Winds could gust up to 60 mph in the mountains and foothills. Gusts could reach 51 mph in Boulder and 55 mph in Estes Park.

The weather service recommends all drivers traveling through the mountains take a flashlight, food and water in their vehicle.
