Cooperstown has four new members this year as Edgar Martinez, Roy Halladay, Mike Mussina and Mariano Rivera have been elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
Both Halladay and Mussina were dominant starting pitchers during their careers, but one stat stood out to me most when looking over their resumés — complete games.
The Rockies’ young staff of starting pitchers could learn a thing of two from these elected hall of famers, and that would be to go deeper into games and finish what you start on the mound.
Mussina finished his 18-year career with 57 complete games and 11 seasons of 200-plus innings. Halladay finished his 16-year career with eight seasons of 200-plus innings pitched with 67 complete games.
In 2003 with Toronto, Halladay finished the season with 266 innings pitched. Both players wanted to compete and finish games they started.
Rockies starting pitchers in 2018 combined for zero complete games. The young staff needs to have some bulldog fight in 2019 if they want to make it back to the postseason. No more looking to the dugout and bullpen in the fifth inning.
Watch below as Mussina yells at Yankees manager Joe Torre to stay in the dugout as he was about to get pulled from a game in the ninth inning with two outs. After yelling, “no, stay there” Mussina got on the mound and struck out the final batter of the game.
Hall of Fame mentality. Hall of Fame stuff.
