For the past few weeks, many have named the long list of accomplishments that Larry Walker has done in his career to argue why he’s worthy of a spot in the Baseball Hall of Fame. And it worked as the former Colorado outfielder finished with 54.6 percent of the votes, his best showing yet.
So if he’s nearly Cooperstown worthy, why haven’t the Rockies retired his number?
In 10 seasons with the Rockies, he’s been an MVP, a four-time all-star, earned five Gold Gloves and two Silver Slugger awards. He has the second highest WAR (48.3) behind only Todd Helton (61.2). He’s the franchise’s all-time leader in batting average (.334), on-base percentage (.426) and slugging (.618). He’s second only to Helton in hits, doubles, home runs and runs batted in.
It seems like a no-brainer, yet it hasn’t happened yet. Only one other player has worn that No. 33 for the Rockies since: first baseman and fellow Canadian Justin Morneau, .
Walker deserves this honor. And who know? If he stays in the spotlight, maybe his next honor will be in Cooperstown next year.
