A bicyclist was killed after crossing in front of a train in Longmont Sunday afternoon, according to Longmont police.

The crash occurred at Ken Pratt Boulevard and Nelson Road, and the intersection is expected to remain closed for several hours as police investigate, according to an email from Deputy Chief Jeff Satur.

Because the intersection is considered a major thoroughfare in Longmont, police advise drivers to find an alternate route.

Satur said the train was going eastbound on the tracks and the bicyclist was walking his bike on the north sidewalk, just north of the intersection. The cyclist then crossed in front of the train, he said.

According to Satur, the train “was reported to be blowing its horn as it approached and later crossed the intersection.”

He also said the signals and lights were functioning, the sounds audible and the crossing arms were down.

The Longmont Fire Department is also responding to the incident as well as the Boulder County Coroner’s Office.

As of about 3:15 p.m. Sunday, Sgt. John Wederquist said he anticipated that the road would remain closed for another hour-and-a-half.
