The most talented college basketball team to visit the state of Colorado this season arrives Wednesday night at Moby Arena in Fort Collins.
A Mountain West juggernaut? You bet. Just not Colorado State.
The Rams play host to No. 6 Nevada at 8 p.m. as part of the team’s annual “State Pride” game and the only thing flashier than CSU’s flag-inspired alternative uniforms will be the opposing talent. The Wolfpack (21-1, 8-1 MWC) are headlined by preseason All-American forward Caleb Martin and a veteran supporting cast that many hoops prophets believe could make run to the Final Four after a Sweet 16 appearance last season. Itap belief reinforced by Nevada coach Eric Musselman — a former longtime NBA assistant with 20 wins in each of his last four seasons — whose ability to lure highly touted transfers to Reno has paid huge dividends.
“I think the plan was, how can we be as good as we can, as quick as we can, with sustainability?” Musselman told ESPN. “Having our fourth year be our best year. That was our plan from day one.”
The task ahead for CSU (9-13, 4-5 MWC) is daunting. Nevada destroyed the Rams two weeks back in Reno by a 40-point margin: 100-60. But college hoops purists should take an opportunity to watch a likely beatdown if only to appreciate history. Moby hasn’t brought in a top-10 team since 2011 (a loss to No. 7 San Diego State) and the Rams haven’t beat such an opponent at home since 1984 (91-82 over No. 5 UTEP).
Is another huge upset ahead? Probably not. The Wolfpack are still worth the price of admission.
