Bison can appear docile to park visitors but have been known to gore tourists who get too close for photographs. Record visitor numbers at the nation’s first national park have transformed its annual summer rush into a sometimes dangerous frenzy, with selfie-taking tourists routinely breaking park rules and getting too close to Yellowstone’s storied elk herds, grizzly bears, wolves and bison.

BOZEMAN, Mont. — The National Park Service is collecting input on a plan to add seasonal housing for employees who provide concessions services in Yellowstone National Park.

The Bozeman Daily Chronicle reports that the plan includes 25 RV sites and a bath house near the west entrance, along with 14 RV sites and modular homes at a second location.

The National Park Service is collecting public comment through Feb. 28. Yellowstone spokeswoman Morgan Warthin says an environmental assessment also will be done.

Officials say the majority of existing housing for concessions staff was built in the 1950s.

Xanterra Parks and Resorts’ general manager Mike Keller says rising visitor numbers at Yellowstone require the concessions company to increase hiring. He says the proposal will help relieve overcrowding in employees’ existing housing facilities.
