Mooney had died of an aggressive form of brain cancer Saturday, a few weeks before his wife is expected to deliver their fifth child.
One by one, fellow South Metro Fire Rescue firefighters, family, friends and hospital staff raised their hands to salute as Mooney’s bed approached.
Mooney’s wife sobbed softly as hospital intercom messages were heard in the background. They were the only sounds that could be heard in the hallway.
The long line of people extended more than 100 feet as Mooney was being escorted to an operating room where his organs would be removed for people who needed his gift of life.
“Saving lives even after his last breath … after losing his courageous fight against an aggressive brain tumor,” a spokesman for the South Metro wrote in tribute to him.
A memorial service for Mooney will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Mission Hills Church, 620 Southpark Drive, Littleton. “All are welcome to come celebrate and honor his life,” a South Metro Fire Rescue tweet says.
