Mike Johnston, a Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate, says he raised more than $1.8 million in the first three months of 2019.

Johnston’s campaign announced the strong showing in a press release Tuesday morning, nearly two weeks before fundraising figures will be made public by the Federal Election Commission.

Johnston is a former state senator and was a gubernatorial candidate last year. He is part of a large and growing field of Democrats hoping to defeat Sen. Cory Gardner, a Yuma Republican, next year. His strong fundraising quarter could make other Democrats think twice about running.

Johnston, 44, said contributions came from all 64 counties in Colorado and do not include any political action committee donations, which he is refusing. The Johnston campaign’s claims could not be verified because an official fundraising report has not been made available by the FEC.

“We are so grateful for such overwhelming support across the state,” Johnston said in the press release. “Colorado deserves a senator who will fight for Colorado values and won’t be afraid to address the real problems facing our country.”
