LIV Sotheby’s International Realty is pleased to announce the sale of 1548 Via La Favorita in Edwards by brokers Malia Cox Nobrega and Barbara Scrivens.
This hilltop Tuscan estate sold for $15,454,000 — the highest price residence in nearly a decade in the neighborhoods outside Vail and Beaver Creek resorts and the highest price residence ever recorded in Edwards.
“Via La Favorita is a very unique home, and we needed a very unique buyer,” Nobrega said. “Not only someone who could afford such a substantial purchase but also someone who embraced the concept of a legacy estate that was not a traditional style for the area. Many buyers looking to purchase a ski home of this magnitude have in their mind a more traditional Colorado mountain property, and this is an authentic Tuscan estate.
“The home was designed by the architectural team Gordon Pierce and Elizabeth Smith, and built by Joseph Abbott. With its timeless quality, this estate will be just as incredible 200 years from now as it is today. The family that purchased this residence will create many years of memories at Via La Favorita.”
The estate, also known as Il Podere or “family homestead” in Tuscan dialect, was first envisioned in 2000 as the Rothkopf family ventured along one of their favorite hiking trails. Eight years later, the dream became a reality and 1548 Via La Favorita was constructed.
With 360-degree views of majestic, snow-capped mountains such as New York Mountain, Sawatch Range, the Gore Range and Castle Peak, this incomparable estate is a noble, Tuscan-style home and a timeless legacy. The home was planned while the builder traveled with the family to Umbria and Tuscany for two weeks, taking hundreds of photos of favorite hilltop houses.
Via La Favorita is set upon a picturesque hill, on more than 120 private acres, and constructed partly with stone gathered from the site and partly with stone from Tuscany.
The main house includes seven bedrooms, 10 bathrooms, a four-car garage and 14,151 square feet. The caretaker’s house includes one bedroom, two bathrooms and a two-car garage. The barn, or bunkhouse, includes four horse stalls and a two-car auxiliary garage.
Other features of the estate include an outdoor tennis court that is built with special material for the altitude, an outdoor heated pool and pool house, an infinity edge hot tub, a billiards room, a hidden poker/cigar room, a 10-seat movie theater, a temperature and humidity-controlled wine cellar, and an expansive exercise and spa area.
“Our house is specially designed with hundreds of custom-made details,” said Dick Rothkopf, the seller of the home. “To afford its unobstructed views, it is not located directly on the ski slopes. To market such a product takes imagination, large quantities of market and financial knowledge, a lot of courage, and the will to work long and hard. Malia and Barbara have all these qualities in spades.
“They were strategic about listing the house, planning from the onset a long-term campaign and targeting a small, exclusive group of potential buyers. It took time, but eventually the right class of buyers began showing up. The showings were long and arduous and there were no instant results. Malia remained focused and diligent. She ferreted out subtle selling points for the house, and she worked closely with potential buyers and brokers, pushing, but never too hard and always with absolute integrity.
“The sale required a full two years, and largely due to Malia and Barbara’s skillful persistence, the house sold at a fair price.”
The sale of this notable home is a proud accomplishment for Nobrega, Scrivens and the firm.
“This was a true team effort on all fronts,” said Nobrega.
Added Scrivens: “It was both an honor and a pleasure to represent the sellers in the sale of Via La Favorita. In our opinion, itap one of the most magnificent estates in the Vail Valley, and it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to have such an exquisite and timeless property within our portfolio.”
