Police jailed a 28-year-old woman and were searching for a man Sunday after somebody fired shots from a vehicle at a Colorado State Patrol trooper in the San Luis Valley.

The shooting happened in the Conejos County town of Antonito on Saturday night.

The trooper wasn’t hit and returned fire. When a woman and man bolted from the vehicle, the trooper chased down the woman. Christina Cano, 28, was wanted on multiple warrants and was being held Sunday night in the Conejos County jail, state patrol spokesman Ivan Alvarado said.

Police were looking for Fernando Vigil, who escaped the scene, Alvarado said.

Cano had not been charged. The Colorado Bureau of Investigation is handling the case.

A vehicle stop led to the shooting. The trooper made the stop based on “multiple outstanding warrants,” Alvarado said.

“It is still under investigation. … Shots were fired from the subjects’ vehicle. We don’t know who it was who opened fire on the trooper,” he said.

After the trooper returned fire, a woman and a man ran from the vehicle. The man, apparently not hit, got away.

Cano suffered minor injuries and police were trying to establish her relationship with the man. Colorado State Patrol officials on Sunday night appealed for help, asking that anybody with information call 719-589-5807. Vigil “is still at large,” Alvarado said Sunday night. “We’re asking for the assistance of the public but, because of his violent tendencies, we don’t want anybody to approach him.”
