1515 Restaurant to close after more than 20 years in downtown Denver

48-year industry vet chef Gene Tang will retire at the end of May

Longtime Denver chef Gene Tang’s LoDo restaurant, 1515, and its Rewind Lounge will close on May 31 after 21 years in business.

The white-tablecloth spot once received 3 1/2 stars (out of four) in a 2005 Denver Post review. By the end of its tenure at 1515 Market St., Tang is still serving lobster Thermidor and eight-course dégustation menus, as well as an Elvis’ peanut butter, banana and chocolate terrine for dessert.

Tang is retiring after 48 years in restaurants. He got his MBA from the University of Denver and opened Cafe Potpourri on Parker Road before launching his 1515.

“Seeing Denver turn into such an amazing restaurant town makes me proud to have been a part of it,” he said in a release. Tang grew 1515’s wine selection to 725 Wine Spectator-awarded labels, and he hosted the James Beard Foundation for a celebrity chef tour dinner.
