You get up before sunrise, before anybody else in the campground, and in the cold morning air slide over to the hot, sulfur-smelling pools. The first rays of the morning pierce the steam rising all around you and it’s completely quiet.

That was my daily ritual during a stay at Fountain of Youth RV Park last summer in Thermopolis, Wyo. It’s hard to beat hot springs camping anywhere — especially at a campground that has actual hot springs on-site — but also at any of the campgrounds located within a few miles from major hot springs.

Some travelers base their entire trip on connecting the dots between these bathing sites; perhaps they’re following the official Colorado Historic Hot Springs Loop, or maybe they’re just making up their own geothermal-inspired wanderings.
