Aurora Police Chief Nick Metz announces an arrest in connection with a shooting that injured four people on June 12, 2019.

Aurora police have arrested a suspect in connection with a shooting early Tuesday that left four people injured.

Aurora police chief Nick Metz announced the arrest at a news conference Wednesday morning where federal and local law enforcement unveiled a joint task force aimed at combating gun violence.

Four people were injured around 1 a.m Tuesday, including a 17-year-old juvenile, when an unknown number of people fired into a crowd during a large outdoor gathering in the 12500 block of East Kansas Place.

People at the scene drove shooting victims to the hospital. One was critically injured, while the three others were in stable condition, police said after the shooting.

Metz told The Denver Post that two of the victims remained in the hospital in critical condition as of Wednesday morning. Police said previously that detectives needed to talk to witnesses about the shooting, but could not complete interviews immediately because of the victims’ status.

Youth gun violence is on the rise and federal, state and local law enforcement agencies are working to solve crimes earlier and curb that violence, Metz said. Even when young people are not the ones to pull the trigger, they are still getting caught up in situations of gun violence, Metz said. He urged family members to talk to their children about the issue.

Police spokeswoman Crystal McCoy said Tuesday that it appears the suspects specifically targeted the gathering. She said on Wednesday that she could not immediately release information about the suspect until family members had been notified.
