
Colorado pet owners might be up in arms after hearing that a recent ranked Oregon as the most pet-friendly state in the country, while Colorado was runner-up.
Although the study says Colorado is a “pet paradise” with of scenic hiking trails, and an estimated , that apparently wasn’t enough to beat out Oregon.
, a home-safety products review company, looked at statistics like the number of anti-animal abuse laws, veterinarians and no-kill shelters in each state. The company also considered factors like pet-friendly restaurants and hotels.
It used sources such as the the and the for its data set.
In order, the top states were Oregon, Colorado, Maine, California, Washington, Louisiana, Virginia, Rhode Island, Texas and New Hampshire.
And on the bottom? Iowa, Missouri, Wyoming, New York, Mississippi, Utah, Hawaii, Kentucky, New Mexico and North Dakota were listed as the nation’s least pet-friendly states.
The study does give kudos to Colorado for having some of the nation’s best animal-protection laws, although it still comes in fourth in the nation, behind Illinois at No.1, Maine at No. 3 and — you guessed it — Oregon at No. 2.
One of those laws is of the , which states domestic violence can include crimes against a victim’s animal. The also requires veterinarians to report suspected cruelty.
“Top it off with Colorado’s stunning national parks and your mutt may never want to leave the mountains,” the study says.
