A state trooper was hit and killed in a crash that closed Interstate 70 in both directions between Limon and Peoria late Friday night, according to the Colorado State Patrol.
The State Patrol tweeted out a little after 1 a.m. that the trooper was “struck and killed in the line of duty.”
The circumstances surrounding the crash have not be disclosed, and it is not known whether or not the trooper, a man, was inside his patrol car at the time of incident. It is also uncertain whether anyone will be cited in the crash.
Nobody else was injured in the crash, Trooper Gary Cutler said.
At 1:20 a.m., CSP tweeted that there would be a police procession within the next hour leaving University Hospital from the area of East 17th Avenue and Racine Street. Minutes later, CSP tweeted that the timing of the procession would be adjusted, and Cutler said at 2:10 a.m. that it would likely be within the next hour.
I-70 closed from mile marker 332 to mile marker 360 after the crash. A detour was put in place using U.S. 36.
With overwhelming sadness we can confirm that a Trooper with the Colorado State Patrol was struck and killed in the line of duty tonight. We ask you keep their family, our CSP family, first responders on scene, and all others affected in your thoughts and prayers.
