Denver’s Elyria-Swansea neighborhood is located in the heart of of the country’s most polluted urban zip codes and now the Central 70 construction project. The Colorado Department of Transportation’s $1.2 billion highway expansion will overhaul 10 miles of Interstate 70 between Brighton Boulevard and Chambers Road. Workers will remove a 54-year-old viaduct, add a new express lane in each direction and lower part of the roadway underground. Families in the neighborhood worry about the impact of dust and diesel exhaust from construction traffic. The construction is projected to last four years.
