Fresh on the heels of the United States’ women’s soccer team win in the FIFA Women’s World Cup final in France, Colorado Gov. Jared Polis on Thursday invited the team to come to Denver.
“I’d like to extend an invitation for the US National Team to celebrate with me at the Colorado State Capitol to commemorate this win,” Polis says in a letter.
I invite the Women’s World Cup Champions to the Colorado State Capitol to celebrate the historic win in the Mile High City! I signed Equal Pay a couple of months ago!

It’s not the first invitation to visit a government institution in which the team has received. The squad will visit both the Senate and the House of Representatives.
I heard Megan Rapinoe —one of the ’s co-captains and stars of the tournament—has accepted my invitation to come to the Senate to celebrate their World Cup victory.
I’m looking forward to scheduling a time when these inspiring women can come to the nation’s capital.

Co-captain Megan Rapinoe in June . President Donald Trump responded, tweeting he would .
“I know you don’t always accept invitations by government officials, but let me just say that in Colorado we share your values of pay equity,” Polis writes, adding that Colorado in April passed an equal pay bill that would compensate employees and punish employers when there’s gender pay discrimiation.
The women’s team has been outspoken about being paid less than their male counterparts, suing the U.S. Soccer Federation in March for gender discrimination.
“I hope you will consider celebrating with the great people of Colorado and help us elevate these important issues across our country,” Polis writes. “I assure you that Colorado has your back and we could not be more proud that two of your team members (Lindsey Horan of Golden and Mallory Pugh of Highlands Ranch) are from our great state.”
